Maka Vasadze


Doctor of Art History, Associate Professor

Marine Vasadze is a theatre scholar, a member of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC), and the secretary of its Georgian branch. She graduated from the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film State University of Georgia,

In 2015 Marine earned her Doctorate in Arts History.

She is currently an Associate Professor at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film State University of Georgia, where she teaches courses in the History of World Theatre, Theatre Criticism, and Theory. Marine leads the History Department of the University and serves as the director of the University’s publishing house, Centaur.

Since 2005, she has been the founder and chairperson of the registered union “Culture,” which unites figures of theatre, culture, and the arts in Georgia.

Between 2005 and 2009, she was a founder and editor of the newspaper Culture.

She has regularly published articles, essays, and reviews on processes and issues of contemporary theatre in both international and Georgian journals and newspapers. She is the author, editor, and compiler-editor of several monographs, textbooks, and study guides.

Over the years, she has served as a member of the Advisory Council under the Ministry of Culture of Georgia (theatre division), as well as a member of the Commission for Independent Theatre Projects under the Tbilisi City Hall. She has also been a jury and commission member of various theatre festivals in Georgia and abroad.

In 2022, she received the prize for Best Review of the Year from the Georgian Theatre Society’s annual awards.
In 2024, she was awarded the Valerian Gunia Prize by the Georgian Theatre Society for her book The Semiotics of Robert Sturua’s Theatrical Language.
