“Dialogue"
Sergo Chakhoiants and Ushangi Khumarashvili
ATINATI’S Cultural Center will be presenting the creative work of two well-known abstract artists: Sergo Chakhoiants (1926–2009) and Ushangi Khumarashvili (1948–2023). The exhibition is meant to represent a kind of dialogue between the two artists. Abstract artworks dating from different periods will be on display. Viewers will detect certain similarities between the two, despite the differences in their styles of execution and attitudes.
Sergo Chakhoiants and Ushangi Khumarashvili both helped to create an era in which abstract art became one of the primary languages of expression. Independently, they each conveyed not only their personal perspectives on the world, but also summed up the essence of the era during which they thrived.
All the works presented at the exhibition are preserved in the private collection of ATINATI.
Sergo (Chakho) Chakhoiants (1926-2009) is a representative of the plethora of Georgian painters who emerged in the 1950s. He was born in Zestafoni, and graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. In Chakhoiants’ creative work from his later period, the artworks executed in oil paints are particularly deserving of note: multi-layered expressive abstractions, both monochrome and pictorial. His works are preserved in both local and international collections.
Ushangi Khumarashvili (1948-2023) was born in Tbilisi. Following his studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, he was appointed to the post of production designer at the Telavi Drama Theater. He rigorously employed the oil painting technique in his work, based on the traditions of classical avant-garde. His works have been exhibited at numerous shows both in Georgia and abroad.
