Architectural Historian

Dr. Tsisia Kiladze (ციცია კილაძე) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, History and Theory of Art at the Apolon Kutateladze Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, with a specialization in Art History. Since 2006 she works as a researcher at the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation in the position of chief researcher. She is employee of the Georgian National Museum, Department of Education. The particular interest of her scientific research is Georgian Painting and Georgian Modernism. Dr. Kiladze delivers lectures at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, Theater and Film Georgian state University and Tbilisi Theological Academy and participates in conferences, and collaborates with scientific magazines. Author of numerous academic papers.

OLD TBILISI ENTRANCE HALLS

The 19th century was a period when the architecture of Tbilisi underwent a significant change. The entrance hall appeared in the architecture of residential houses, which became a sign of respectability and Europeanization. Since the 1850s-60s, luxuriously decorated entrance halls emerged as an important element of "fashionable" buildings. They determined the culture and atmosphere of urban life, and imparted a festive and characteristic appearance to Tbilisi’s houses. The entrance hall became a link between public and private spaces. Its style of decoration and wall paintings tells us the history and life-story of the house; gives us information about its builder, decorator, and owner; it acted as a kind of “calling card” of the owner and was thus particularly lavishly decorated[1].
